The Plan of Salvation Pop up Book

4th-6th grades

When we studied the plan of salvation for our VBS, my class put together a pop-up book. Each day we added another page to the book. The pdf files below are the masters for the book. I hope the instructions are clear enough and the book goes together properly. I am definitely not an expert at this, so the book may require some tweaking.

There are some general instructions that will make assembly easier. The pages are printed on white cardstock. Each page should be ready for class leaving a little bit for the kids to do. For instance, glue the pockets on the HEAR page before class. Also have the paper dolls cut out before class and let the kids color them during class. If you have a helper or 2, you could possibly cut them out in class. I try to not let the activity (cutting, pasting, etc) take up too much class time.

After class, glue the current page to the previous page so when the kids come to class again, their book is growing. The glue should be Elmer's (or something similar). Glue along all edges of the top of the page and then press it against the bottom of the previous page (or in the case of the vertical book -- glue on the left hand side of the page and press it against the right hand side of the previous page). These previous pages are an excellent to review previous lessons. I also like to make a couple of extras for visitors. If a student is not present, go ahead and add to his book so he doesn't have a partly made book.

The cover is the last thing that goes on the book. It needs to be put on when all the pages are complete. When you're ready to add the cover, use a paper cutter to cut the cover in half so you have a front and a back. Cut a strip of carstock 8 1/2" X 1 1/2" for the binding. Fold 1/4" on both the long edges of the binding. Glue one 1/4" edge of the binding to the front cover (my 1/4" edge was usually on the outside of the cover) and the other 1/4" edge to the back cover. This glue should also be Elmer's. Glue the front cover to the top of the book and the back cover to the back of the book. Make sure that the glue is as close to the edge as it can be without leaking out. Let the books dry open so the pages don't stick together.

The front cover has a large blank space. During class, trace the child's hand in that space. The hand is what we used to help memorize the 5 steps to salvation. The child can then color the hand or you can help him write or draw pictures of the 5 steps. You could also leave it just an outline of his hand.

The book I used for the pictures below was an extra I had made for visitors. The paper dolls for the confess page are not colored and the person being baptized is not colored. The hand on the front page is just lightly penciled in. Excuse the poor photography, I did the photography myself. I am not a photographer.
