What a joy it is to teach your child to read. When you give your child the gift of reading he can learn anything. He will be able to read the Bible for himself, learn about dentistry, take imaginary voyages to distant lands. The whole world opens up to him and he can do whatever he desires.
Contrary to many popular beliefs, learning to read is something that everyone can do. Learning to read is like learning a secret code. Before you know the code, it looks very hard, but once you've learned the code, it is easy. Phonics is the only way to teach the secret code. If the curriculum you are using relies heavily on sight words, then it is not a phonics curriculum. The phonics curriculum you choose should teach all of the letter sounds and blends in the english language. Without these, you haven't broken the code.
The phonics curriculum below meet this criteria. Choose one based on your teaching style and your child's learning style. Which ever one you choose will be great.
I have personally used Learning Language Arts Through Literature (a cuddle on the couch, crafty, gentle program) and Reading Made Easy (No frills, easy to use, effective). I enjoyed teaching from both of them and my children learned well also.
