Latin For Children

I had a conversation with a local home school mom about Latin not long ago. She was wanting to teach Latin to her child, but was having trouble understanding it herself. I could sympathize with her 100%.

I have been teaching Latin to my children for several years. Each time, I try a different curriculum. You could say it's because I've been doing it so long, but I don't really think that's it. I've finally found a Latin curriculum that I can understand.

All of the programs teach you to decline nouns and conjugate verbs. What they leave out is why. Or at least, I didn't pick up on it. I tried Latin For Children this year with my 5th and 8th grade boys. I am loving it.

What sets this one apart is the DVD. It is as if the Perrins have invited us into their home for Latin class. Dad teaches the girls while they sit around the table, or the on the couch or wherever. We see them chanting Latin as they get ready to go to the store, clean the kitchen, etc. The explanations given to the girls are very simple and easy for even me to understand.

The other thing I like about Latin For Children is the vocabulary. The children are introduced to 10 new vocabulary words each week for a total of 240 high-frequency latin words. That's a lot of vocabulary. There is just enough review to help the students remember the vocabulary. The vocabulary introduced in Latin For Children is what I would call "useful" vocabulary. Each latin word is useful in increasing your child's English vocabulary.

Each level of Latin For Children is made up:

  • Answer Keys -- features the actual text with answers in bold print
  • DVDs & Chant CD -- offers chapter-by-chapter training by the author with 2 students. The chant cd contains all 240 vocabulary words chanted and sung in both the classical & ecclesiastical pronunciations.
  • History Readers -- Read Latin stories from history that are geared towards what is being learned in each Primer.
  • Activity Books! -- Play games and puzzles that help to ingrain the Latin vocabulary and grammar from each Primer.
