E.D. Hirsch, Jr. saw a need to teach our children about some basic things in our cultural and about our world. Many children today are isolated from the very simple pleasure our cultural has to offer. Television, video games, political correctness, lack of extended family, etc. have caused our children to grow up in a very different world than we did. Some of the changes, such as TV, have broaden our children's awareness of many things that before were not possible. There are some wonderful children's programs out there. The lack of extended family nearby has left a void in our children's lives when it comes to stories of the past, or something as simple as familiar sayings (such as: "Better safe than sorry").
I know, as a home school parent, I have to make a point to teach some things that every child should have the privilege of knowing. I find myself neglecting some of the old Fairy Tales and fables that children have delighted in for years. I sometimes become so wrapped up in teaching phonics and math that I need to be reminded about some of the simple pleasures available to my children.
That's where the Core Knowledge Series comes in. There is a book for each level from Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Each book covers topics in a more involved manner than the last. Your child (and yourself) will become familiar with literature, history, visual arts and much more. Use these books as a spring board to design your child's learning, as a basis for unit studies, or just for cuddle on the couch reading (either aloud or silently).
