A Generation That Knows Not God

"And there arose another generation after them that knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which He had done for Israel." These are among the saddest words in the Bible. A whole generation of children had not been taught by their parents about the great God that had done such marvelous things for them. We read those words and wonder how this could've ever happened. These people had actually seen great miracles, witnessed the power of God as well as the justice of God. How could they fail to teach their children.
Look around. What about the children worshiping at your congregation? Are they being taught about God? About His love? Justice? Power? What about the generation just before the young ones there now? Are they faithful to God? Were they taught or was it a generation that didn't know God?
Whose responsibility is it to teach them? God gave the first and foremost responsibility to the parents. Parents don't deliberately fail to teach about God. They tend to think that their kids will get it somehow. Many parents think that sending them Bible class is all that's needed. After all, they learned to read by sending them to school. They learned to play baseball by signing them up for little league. They learned the piano by going to music lessons.
Well, taking the children to Bible class is great, but the time spent there is so limited, it is not enough. Parents must teach their children at home -- "when they rise up, when they lie down, when they walk down the path" -- in other words during the everyday events of life.
Okay, what about the Bible classes. Are the ones where you worship doing a good job helping the parents? Do they use those precious few minutes wisely? Are the children being taught about the truths of God, or they just learning how to share, be kind and go to church?
A Generation That Knows Not God will help improve the parents teaching as well as the Bible class teacher's teaching. We must teach our children the entire Bible in order with enthusiasm. We mustn't dumb down the wonderful stories that God purposely inspired the writers of the Bible to tell us. We must let the children know that God is love, but God is also powerful, awesome, fair, and that God has and always has had a plan for man.
Bob and Sandra Waldron have written this book in an easily read format that quite frankly, I couldn't put down. Their call to action was exciting for me and caused me to bring about immediate changes in my Bible class teaching. A Generation That knows Not God is appropriate for a teacher training type class or personal study. Every congregation should make it available in their library or resource room.
