Coloring Books
I'm not a big fan of passing out color sheets and coloring them in Bible Class. You may ask why I am selling them here then. I love coloring books if they are used in the right way. I don't think we need to "fill time" with color sheets. Use color sheets the same way you would any activity.
Ask the questions:
Does this help the children remember the story?
Do we have enough time to complete the activity?
Will the children be so wrapped up in coloring that they lose sight of what they are coloring?
There are several ways that color sheets can be used very effectively in a Bible Class. Many of them can be used for visual aids as you tell the lesson or as you review the lesson. Some of the Coloring books can be used as a flip chart (they even have the story written on the bottom of the page) while others can be used for a visual timeline to be added to each week, an illustration for a song you are teaching, or even as pictures to include in a prayer box.
Another suggestion is to make a sequencing activity. After coloring and laminating the pictures, hang a small rope on the wall that has clothes pins for the children to attach the pictures in the order they happened in the story. This is a great activity that can be used as review all through the quarter. File it in the resource room when you are finished to be used next time around.
If you do decide to use time in class coloring pictures, sing songs that pertain to the lesson or review the lesson and discuss the picture they are drawing while they are coloring. Even better, give the children a blank piece of paper and let them draw a picture about the lesson. This will really make them think about what they learned, involving them more fully in the learning process.
As with all books written by men, carefully select the books and even the pages within the books so they reflect the truths of God and the specific lesson you are teaching.
I have included books on Christmas and Easter, because the pictures themselves are accurate, even if the title on the front implies that celebrating Christmas and Easter are scriptural. The Bible commands that we remember Christ's death every first day of the week and never commands us to celebrate His birth.
When using coloring books, please be aware of the copyright laws. The coloring books listed first are very inexpensive. To keep the costs down please don't reproduce them without the permission of the publisher. If you want to use the front and back of a page, buy two books.
